Habitat for Humanity Has an Idea

Two-thirds of single family homes in Missoula, don’t have families in them – many are empty-nesters and seniors...many living alone. So Habitat for Humanity Executive Director proposes dividing some of those lots in two and building new homes on them. Owners would ‘gift’ part of their lot to a community land trust and get lower property taxes and a tax deduction. Groups like Habitat could build on the newly divided lots without having to invest in high-priced land, creating affordable housing and reducing the impacts on traffic, parking and schools.
